Choose a bed for the way your dog actually sleeps

A practical way to match bed shape, support, and materials to the sleeper already curled up beside you.

The right bed is less about a perfect product label and more about watching how your dog already sleeps. Their favorite position tells you a surprising amount about the shape, support, and space they need.

Watch their sleeping position

Dogs who curl tightly often enjoy a nest-like bed with raised sides. Dogs who stretch from nose to tail need a flat surface with enough room to avoid hanging over the edge. If your dog rests their head on furniture arms, a bolster can provide that familiar support.

Choose support before softness

A bed can feel fluffy in the shop and still flatten quickly at home. Press down with your palm: if you immediately feel the floor, a larger or heavier dog may do the same. Dense foam usually keeps its shape better than loose filling.

Plan for real-life cleaning

Look for a removable, machine-washable cover and check whether the inner liner protects the filling. Zips should be covered or positioned where curious teeth cannot reach them.

It is also worth checking the actual care label before buying. “Washable” sometimes means spot-clean only, which may not fit muddy paws, shedding, or the occasional accident.
